AN ANALYSIS OF EFL TEACHERS’ PEDAGOGIC COMPETENCE IN TEACHING ENGLISH AT SMP NEGERI 8 LUBUKLINGGAU

The aim of this research was to find out “what is the pedagogical competence of EFL teachers in teaching English at the 8th State High School in Lubuklinggau?” The subject of this research is two English teachers at SMP Negeri 8 Lubuklinggau. The method used by the researchers is qualitative descriptive. The data collection techniques are: the researcher creates a questionnaire, and gives it to the teacher with an interview statement, then the researcher analyzes the results of the interview, and the researchers conduct their interviews related to the outcome of the questionnaires. The instruments in this research are questionnaires and interviews. The steps of data analysis techniques were: data reduction; data visualization, data drawing conclusion and verification are all data analysis activities. Finally, the results of this study show that First and Second Teachers use curriculum and syllabus in teaching, teachers also respond to students when they ask questions, teacher uses media in teachings and gives students a score when students can answer questions from teachers, teacher gives tasks and gives evaluation of teachers at the end of the class. Further from the results of interviews with both English teachers at SMP Negeri 8 Lubuklinggau, it was seen that they used different strategies depending on the class situation and the individual students. The conclusion of two English teachers at the SMP Negeri 8 Lubuklinggau the some steps were missing, in the data of the interview result and the questionnaire it also can be seen that the first and second teacher has a good pedagogical competence.
