<note>this research was conducted to apply ESA(engage, study and activate) in teaching speaking to the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri Karang Panggung?”. Therefore, the objective of this study was to find out whether or not it was effective to use ESA (engage, study and activate)) in teaching speaking to the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri Karang Panggung in the academic year of 2018/2019. In this study, the writer proposed two hypotheses. That is, null hypotheses (Ho) and alternative hypotheses (Ha). The method applied was pre- experiment method with one group pre-test post-test design. The population of this study was all the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri Karang Panggung which consisted of 100 students. The sample was taken through cluster random sampling. The number of the sample was 33 students. The data were collected by using oral test. The data obtained analyzed through three techniques: 1) Individual score, 2) Conversion of Individual Score, and 3) The Paired t-test. The result of study: (1) The mean students score in the pre-test was 53.45, (2) The mean students score in the post-test was 66.15, and (3) The Result of Paired t-Test was 18.14, which was higher than 1.697 value of the ttable of 33 with 95% significance level for one tailed-test. Therefore, the null hypotheses (Ho) was rejected and the alternative hypotheses (ha) was accepted. It means that is was effective to use ESA(engage, study and activate) in teaching speaking to the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri Karang Panggung.
