A Survey of English Learning Strategies (ELS) Utilized by the EFL Students

The objectives of this study were to identify the English Learning Strategies (ELS) utilized by the students at SMP Negeri L. Sidoharjo, as well to describe the reasons of students at SMP Negeri L. Sidoharjo in using English Learning Strategies (ELS). The population was the seventh grade students with total number 200 students, and the sample was class VII.2 with 33 students. To obtain the data, the writers used questionnaire of Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) by Rebecca L. Oxford and interview. Technique of analyzing the data was by using descriptive statistical method. The result of analysis in the study indicated that Affective Strategy as the dominant learning strategies of the students with the average 2,85. The second dominant was Memory Strategy. Metacognitive Strategy was the third dominant strategy. Compensation Strategy and Cognitive Strategy became the fourth and fifth dominant. The least, the dominant strategy was Social Strategy. The result showed that the EFL students used all of strategies in learning English as a foreign language in the level of Junior High School. From the interview, it was found out that there were three reasons of students in using English Learning Strategies. They were: 1) to facilitate them in learning English easier, 2) to be success in learning English, and 3) to get a better achievement in English subject.
