AN ANALYSIS OF FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE IN SYLVIA PLATH POEMS

The problem of this research was “what are the types of Figurative Language used in Sylvia Plath poems?”. The objective of this research was to analyze types of figurative language used in Sylvia Plath poems: Mirror, Morning Song, and Metaphors. This research was qualitative research. The object of the research are poems by Sylvia Plath: Mirror, Morning Song and Metaphor. Techniques of collecting data are the researcher selected the Sylvia Plath poems in the book, the research read the poems more than once, the researcher identified classification of figurative language used Sylvia Plath’s poems. Technique of analyzing data the researcher used “Identification, Classification, Reduction, Description, Conclusion.” In conclusion this research found that there were 24 figurative language occured in the Sylvia Plath poems, they were: 5 personifications, 5 similes, 11 metaphors, 1 paradox, and 1 symbolism, but in three poems there is no irony and metonymy.
