AN ANALYSIS OF POLITENESS STRATEGIES USED BY THE STUDENTS AND A TEACHER IN ENGLISH CLASS AT SMK N 3 LUBUKLINGGAU

This study aims to explain what kinds of politeness strategies are used by the students in english class at SMK N 3 Lubuklinggau and to explain what kind of politeness strategies are used by a teacher in english class at SMK N 3 Lubuklinggau. research is a type of qualitative descriptive research. The subjects of this study were teacher and students SMK N 3 Lubuklinggau. Data collection techniques were carried out by interview, observation, and documentation. Data were analyzed using components recommended by Brown and Levinson. Data collection was carried out at morning, after the data collected were immediately analyzed. The results showed that the politeness strategies of teacher and students were seen when the researchers made observations. The politeness strategy research describes teachers and students in SMK N 3 Lubuklinggau The politeness strategy research describes teachers and students . The results of this study indicate that what are the politeness strategies used by students and teachers in English class at SMK N 3 Lubuklinggau. 61 utterances of politeness strategies were used by teacher, the researchers found 20 using bald on record strategies, and for 20 using positive politeness strategies, 14 using negative politeness strategies, and 7 using the Off-record strategy. It can be concluded that the use of politeness strategies used by teachers is dominated by bald-on record strategies. Then 19 utterances of politeness strategies were used by students, the researcher found 8 using bald on record strategies, 9 using positive politeness strategies, and 2 using negative politeness strategies, from the research conducted by researcher.
