AN ANALYSIS OF FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE OF SHAWN MENDES’S SELECTED SONGS LYRICS

This research aimed to identify the types of figurative language which was used in Shawn Mendes’s song lyrics and to find out the most dominant figurative language in Shawn Mendes’s song lyrics. In this research, the researcher used contains research with qualitative approach and the data was analyzed by using theory of figurative language by Keraf. The data was collected from the album entitled; In My Blood, Nervous, Lost in Japan, Like to be you, Fallin’ all in you, Particular Taste, and Why. In collecting data, the researcher chose study document as the way to collect the data. It was a kind of data collection technique by classifying documents relatingto the problems discussed, website or several sources, journal, book, archives, etc. Shawn Mendes album song lyrics would be as the source of analysis. In this research of the data, the researcher found out there were 5 figurative languages, they were: personification, metaphor, simile, hyperbole, and repetition that used in selected Shawn Mendes song lyrics. The r e s u l t o f t h e researcher found out five types of figurative language that was used in selected Shawn Mendes album song lyrics, they were metaphor, hyperbole, personification, simile and repetition. There are 3 metaphors, 9 hyperboles, 2 personifications, 1 simile, 4 repetitions. The totally was 19 figurative language in selected Shawn Mendes album songs. From the data analysis above, the researcher found out that the most figurative languages that were used in selected Shawn Mendes album song lyrics was hyperbole and the least figurative language was simile. From the data above, the researcher concluded in the third song “Nervous”, there was any 3 song lyric which was used Hyperbole. Therefore, the total of Hyperbole was 6 song lyrics.
