The objective of this research is: “To analyze third semester students’ ability in writing essay at PGRI Silampari University in academic year 2020/2021 in Writing for Academic Purposes class. Therefore, The problem of this research was “How are the third semester students’ ability in writing essay at PGRI Silampari University?” The subject of this research was all of the third-semester students of English study program at PGRI Silampari University in academic year 2020/2021 consisted 23 students. The researcher used descriptive quallitative method and the data were collected through written test. Based on the result of the data analysis In organization, the students wrote down the essay which consist of introduction, body and conclusion. But, it was still found some students that wrote argumentative essay lost of essay organization. The second is logical development of ideas. Here, there were some students develop ideas out of the topic. Then, the researcher found many students did grammar errors. Next is punctuation, spelling and mechanics where many students had errors in punctuation, spelling, mechanics and the last criteria in style and or quality of expressions their essay. The quality of expression used by the students is still low. In conclusion, students in writing argumentative essays structurally are good. but there are some that are not appropriate and after being analyzed based on 5 components.
