LANGUAGE MAINTENANCE AND SHIFT IN JAVANESE COMMUNITY AS MIGRANT MAJORITY IN MULTILINGUAL SPEECH IN MUSI RAWAS REGENCY

The purpose of this research was to find out and describe (1). What were the forms of the language maintenance and shift in Javanese community in Musi Rawas Regency verbally, (2). What were the factors that influence the language maintenance and shift in Javanese community in Musi Rawas regency. The research method used was a descriptive qualitative research. The subject of the research were 40 respondents from the Javanese who live in Trikoyo in Tugumulyo. that were chosen by cluster random sampling. In collecting the data, questionnaire and interview were used by the researcher. Furthermore, the data were analyzed with Holmes theory in the form of description. The results showed that there are several forms and factors that influence language maintenance and shift. The researcher found that forms of language maintenance are found in private space and Javanese activities/communities, while forms of language shift are found in Javanese language use then and now and also shifting from Javanese to Indonesian language in work place. Regarding the factors that influence language maintenance, most respondents indicated that private space, Javanese activities/communities, place of birth, awareness and concern for the javanese language, and proud of Javanese influence their language maintenance. Besides, work place, public space, and absence of local government policy influence their language shift. Overall, this study emphasizes the relationship between preserving Javanese and matching modern linguistic demands. To effectively preserve Javanese language, these issues must be addressed while balancing the requirement for cultural continuity with modernization demands.
