AN ANALYSIS OF INTRINSIC ELEMENTS IN “THE LAST LEAF”BY O.HENRY

The purpose of this study was to analyze and describe the intrinsic elements of O. Henry’s short story using a structural approach in order to reveal the artistic and moral values contained in story . The theoretical framework is based on structuralism, focusing on theme, plot, characters, setting, point of view, symbolism, and moral values as proposed in literary studies.This research applies a qualitative descriptive method. The data source is O. Henry’s short story The Last Leaf. Data were collected through close reading and note-taking to identify textual evidence related to the intrinsic aspects. The research procedure consisted of several steps: (1) comprehensively reading and understanding the story, (2) identifying its intrinsic elements, (3) classifying data based on the categories of intrinsic aspects, and (4) analyzing and interpreting the findings through a structural approach.The results show that the main theme emphasizes sacrifice, hope, and true friendship. The plot demonstrates a clear sequence of exposition, conflict, climax, and resolution. The characters symbolize perseverance, compassion, and selflessness. The setting and the third-person omniscient point of view enrich the emotional depth of the story. The last leaf serves as a symbol of faith, survival, and sacrifice. The moral values highlighted are optimism, solidarity, and the willingness to help others.In conclusion, O. Henry successfully integrates these intrinsic elements into a short story that not only entertains readers but also provides moral inspiration and valuable life lessons.
