<note>This research explore the use of politeness strategies in classroom interactions between an English teacher and fifth-grade students at Putra Putri Bangsa Elementary School. The purpose is to identify, describe, and analyze the types of politeness strategies used during English lessons. A descriptive qualitative method was applied, with data collected through non-participant observation and documentation, including field notes and video recordings of three classroom sessions in April 2025. The participants consisted of one English teacher and 18 students, nine boys and nine girls. The results showed that the teacher used 290 politeness strategies, dominated by bald on record with 191 occurrences, followed by negative politeness with 41, positive politeness with 40, and off record with 18. Students, on the other hand, produced 315 politeness strategies, most frequently positive politeness with 180 occurrences, followed by off record with 45, bald on record with 58, and negative politeness with 32. These findings indicate that the teacher relied more on direct communication to maintain discipline, provide clear instructions, and control the classroom, while students often used polite expressions to show respect, ask permission, and build good relationships with both the teacher and peers. In conclusion, the use of politeness strategies in the classroom was appropriate and reflected each participant’s communicative role, supporting a respectful, effective, and engaging learning atmosphere that highlights the importance of politeness in fostering positive teacher-student interaction.
