SOCIOLINGUISTICS PHENOMENON: MAINTENANCE AND SHIFT OF MINANG LANGUAGE USED BY MINANGKABAUNESE IN LUBUKLINGGAU

This research aimed to identify and describe the influencing factors within the Minangkabaunese in West Lubuklinggau II maintenance and shift of Minang Language. The method in this research was descriptive qualitative. The subjects of this research were 50 respondents from the Minangkabaunese who live in Pemiri, Bandung Kanan, and Keputeraan in West Lubuklinggau II. The data were collected by using quesionaire and interview. Furthermore, the data were analyzed with holmes Theory in the form of description. The results showed that most respondents predominantly use Indonesian and Lubuklinggau languages in professional settings, while Minang is primarily used within family and community contexts. The lack of supportive local government policies for the Minang language has limited its formal use, contributing to its reduced presence in public and official domains. Despite a widespread recognition of Minang's importance for cultural identity, there is a notable perspective among some respondents that shifting towards Indonesian and other languages is beneficial for personal advancement and integration into broader social and economic contexts. Overall, the research highlights a complex interplay between maintaining the Minang language and adapting to modern linguistic demands. Effective preservation of Minang requires addressing these challenges while balancing the need for cultural continuity with the pressures of modernization.
