ANALYZING GRAMMATICAL ERRORS IN STUDENTS' THESES AT PGRI SILAMPARI UNIVERSITY USING GRAMMARLY PREMIUM AND DULAY'S THEORY
XML JSONThis study aims to analyse grammatical errors in the background texts of the theses of students of the English Language Education Study Program at PGRI Silampari University who graduated in 2024. The research subjects consisted of 34 thesis background texts. This study used a descriptive qualitative method with two stages of data analysis. In the first stage, Grammarly Premium was used to detect grammatical errors automatically. The analysis results showed errors in the categories of determiner use, incorrect verb forms, incorrect noun number, faulty subject-verb agreement, misuse of modifiers, conjunctions, and misplaced words. Meanwhile, no errors were found in the categories of incorrect phrasing, modal verbs, misuse of quantifiers, and faulty tense sequence. In the second stage, errors were classified according to the Surface Strategy Taxonomy by Dulay, Burt, and Krashen, which categorises errors into four types: omission, addition, misformation, and misordering. All types of errors were found in the data, with omission and misformation being the most dominant categories. These findings suggest that students continue to struggle with mastering the fundamental structure of English grammar. This research is expected to serve as evaluation material in academic learning, particularly in efforts to enhance students' writing skills.
Keywords: English Grammar, Grammatical Errors, Grammarly Premium.
